NEW HAVEN — Imagine teenagers and young adults on the autism spectrum, with Down syndrome and other special needs, developing scenes, coming up with the dialogue, creating song lyrics and bringing it all to the stage as actors and singers.
It might seem like a stretch, but it’s happening right here in “Play with Grace,” and the organization’s Taking Flight expressive drama program.
Jarrod Law, one of the program’s founders, as well as a director and a participant, is a non-verbal artist and writer on the autism spectrum whose mission is to highlight the talents of those with disabilities.
Carmelina Mosher, founder of the group, is a psychotherapist and creative arts and drama therapist, and describes expressive drama as, “a ceremony of the self in a given moment, which is creatively expanded and expounded upon until internal truths are found.”
“Through improvising and interacting with other participants, stories are created and are manifested on stage.” Mosher said. “Each participant creates their own scene, and chooses co-actors, who each represent different aspects of the participant’s self. Together, as we explore and celebrate the enactment and expression of this aspect of the participant, therapeutic transformation occurs.”

Carmelina Mosher, Expressive Arts Therapist
Carmelina Mosher is an Expressive Arts Psychotherapist, Educator and Visionary Artist with a private practice in New Haven, CT. A writer and illustrator of faerie tales, she also designs psychotherapy games and shows her paintings internationally.
Mosher is of Penobscot (Abenaki) heritage. Her art and writings explore a collective mythology that people of any age and culture can appreciate.
"We all feel differently from moment to moment. Our mind is constantly shifting. Thoughts and feelings are processed through sensory images before words. Expression through the arts often reflects our inner thoughts and feelings. This expression becomes a metaphor for how we live our lives. Arts are a bridge to our soul, and the gate to our soul's evolution. As a guide, I am privileged to witness the power of healing through the arts."
